Thank You Texas

by Shannon

Dear Texas,

After 31 years it’s time for me to bid you goodbye. I can’t honestly say it’s always been fun, but I am so grateful for how you have cared for me and mine over these three decades. You may never be my true home, Alaska claimed that spot long ago, but you will forever be in my heart. Before I go, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for my time here.

Thank you for being the birthplace of my children. I’m proud to be the mom, and wife, of true Texans.

Thank you for the friends I’ve made within your borders. Many of them have become family that will forever be in my life – no matter the distance between us.

Thank you for the healing in my family that’s taken place here. We’ve seen healed relationships, hearts, minds and spirits during our time in your domain.

Thank you for the financial stability you’ve provided the husband and me. We would not be able to make a move into our dream home in Colorado without the foundation your booming economy provided.

Thank you for fostering my love of storms. I’ll admit the threat of tornadoes terrified me when I first moved to Texas, but now I join the husband on the porch as we ignore the tornado sirens and marvel at the beauty of a raging thunderstorm as it barrels towards us. It’s truly majestic.

Thank you for the friendly people here.

Thank you for my dear Stella. Okay, I know she was actually found wandering a road in some tiny Oklahoma town, but we found her through DFW Husky Rescue, so the credit still goes to you.

Thank you for your understanding when I cursed you for your unrelenting summers. It wasn’t personal.

Thank you for all the other things I can’t think of now. I know I will miss many things about you. I promise to keep in touch. After all, most of the people I love the most still call you home.

If you need me, I’ll be basking in the cooler temps of Colorado. I’ll try to send you some once in a while.

Love,

A Grateful Alaska Girl
