Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

Turn and face the strange changes…

 – David Bowie

I can’t seem to get this line out of my head as it’s time for the Browns to turn and face a monumental change. After over 30 years in Texas we are moving to Colorado. Honestly, it’s surreal to see that last sentence in print. 31 years. Wow.

Growing up a military brat, I never imagined living in any one place more than a few years. In fact, when we first arrived in Texas our plan was to be here no more than 3 years. Then we were headed back north to the mountains and cooler weather. It only took us 10 times longer, proving once again that Divine comedy is alive and well. We make plans and God says, hold my beer…

The first few years we lived here we moved a few times from one apartment to the next, finally buying our first home when our oldest was 6 months old. We lived there for 5 years – a lifetime to me at that point – and then made the move to Frisco. In November it would have been 20 years in our house. That’s longer than any of our parents have ever lived in one place. Dang, we got old!

Now, we are faced with the gargantuan task of sorting through 20 years of accumulation, preparing our beloved home for the next family to love it, and finding our new home in Colorado. That’s a lot. Lots of tears. Lots of excitement. And, if I’m honest, a heavy dose of anxiety. It has been fun looking through old things. Heartbreaking at times to divest myself of some of it. It has reminded me of how much love I’ve had in my life. More than I ever deserved, but man am I grateful for all of it.

Our house is currently for sale. It was a painstaking process to get it ready. It looks beautiful, but it’s missing something. As my mom aptly summed it up, “There’s no Brown there anymore.” Exactly. It makes me a little sad, however I’ve mostly made my peace with it. Midnight Moon has been good to us (and many others – I’ll share about that soon). But now she’s ready to love on a new family. I hope they feel as much joy there as we have. It’s been a real blessing to us.

Anybody need a new house? I know a great one that’s for sale! In the meantime, “the mountains are calling and I must go!”
